Since its founding in 1944, TAMKO Building Products has grown from a small business with a single plant in Joplin, Missouri to one of the largest privately-owned roofing manufacturers in the United States. Today, TAMKO has facilities located across the country and produces a wide range of roofing, decking, railing, waterproofing, cement and coating products.
TAMKO’s story first began on March 9, 1944 when E.L. Craig bought Lehrack Asphalt Roofs from a former business partner who passed away before opening his roofing plant in Joplin. The assets involved an old streetcar barn on High Street and some shingle-making equipment.
On September 5, 1944, Craig named the new company TAMKO, which represented the first letters of the states that made up the business’s original trade area: Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma.
Today, TAMKOis owned and operated by the second and third generation of the Craig-Humphreys family. TAMKO’s product line has expanded and now includes a variety of building products, such as composite decking and railing, metal shingles, waterproofing products, and cements and coatings.
The company’s name was officially changed from TAMKO Roofing Products, Inc. to TAMKO Building Products, Inc. to reflect the business’s growth in 2006. Today, the company operates in 27 facilities across the country and sells its products throughout the contiguous United States.
Along with manufacturing building products, TAMKO is also involved in the communities where it is located. TAMKO sponsors a number of youth organizations in these communities and donates to many great charities. Following the Joplin tornado of 2011, TAMKO and its owners donated more than $2 million to schools in Joplin, the American Red Cross andemployees affected by the storm. TAMKO also donated building materials to the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project to build seven new homes in the affected region.
TAMKO and/or its owners have also donated funds and building products to the Barnabas kids’ ranch in Purdy, Missouri, the Ronald McDonald House, Salvation Army, and Joplin Police Department, among many other organizations. TAMKO’s owners annually award $600,000 in scholarships to students at Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School in Joplin – a school the family founded – and sponsors many organizations, including the Joplin Globe Spelling Bee, Sarcoxie, Missouri High School Band and youth sports teams in Joplin, Carthage and Lamar, Missouri and Columbus, Kansas.
