TAMKO Provides Building Products for More Than 71 Years

Since its founding in 1944, TAMKO Building Products has grown from a small business with a single plant in Joplin, Missouri to one of the largest privately-owned roofing manufacturers in the United States. Today, TAMKO has facilities located across the country and produces a wide range of roofing, decking, railing, waterproofing, cement and coating products.

TAMKO’s Founding

TAMKO foundingTAMKO’s story first began on March 9, 1944 when E.L. Craig bought Lehrack Asphalt Roofs from a former business partner who passed away before opening his roofing plant in Joplin. The assets involved an old streetcar barn on High Street and some shingle-making equipment.

On September 5, 1944, Craig named the new company TAMKO, which represented the first letters of the states that made up the business’s original trade area: Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma.
